Blade types.
This is the question that turns a good razor into a one-star review. Buy the wrong format and the blade will not sit, will not clamp, or sits crooked — and none of that is the razor being faulty.
Two formats, not interchangeable
| Half DE | An ordinary double-edge safety razor blade snapped across the middle into two half-length blades. Cheap, sold in every chemist, and the most common folding-razor fitting. The holder usually has locating pins that pass through the blade’s slot. |

| Single-edge (AC) | A longer one-sided blade sold ready to use — the format many professional barbers’ razors take. More rigid, longer edge, dearer per blade. Sometimes called Feather-style after the best-known maker. |
A holder built for one will not properly hold the other. A half DE in a single-edge holder has nothing to locate against; a single-edge blade in a DE holder is too long and will not close.
Telling which yours takes
- Open the plate and look at the bed length. Half-DE is roughly 4 cm; single-edge the best part of 6 cm.
- Look for locating pins. Two small posts a DE blade’s slot drops over means half DE.
- Check what came in the box, if anything.
- Read the listing. A razor that will not tell you what it eats is a razor to be wary of.

Questions
Are branded blades worth it?
Blades vary far more than razors do. The difference between a harsh blade and one that suits your face is bigger than most people expect, and they are cheap enough to buy a sampler and find out.
Can I sharpen a replaceable blade?
No, and there is no reason to. The blade is a consumable designed to be swapped. Sharpening is what a traditional cut-throat needs and a replaceable-blade razor exists to avoid.
How do I dispose of used blades?
A blade bank or a sealed rigid tin. Never loose in a household bin.
